We don’t know about you, but we get really excited about seeing places we’ve visited on film! The film world always feels like another dimension, and travel can already feel like you’ve been dropped into a post card, so when film and travel are combined, it can be magical.
We visit so many places around the world, and many of them have featured prominently in film and/or tv. So we thought we would highlight some of them, in case you might not have put them together.
ISCHIA, ITALY
If you’ve ever talked to anyone on the team about Ischia, you will most likely hear about The Talented Mr. Ripley, as the island is featured prominently, and we love the classic style of this thriller. The movie in its entirety is a love letter to the old school glam of Italy in the 1950s with scenes shot in Rome and Venice, but some of the most memorable scenes are on the beaches and in the waters of the island. They also recently filmed Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend there, and many old Hollywood films, such as Elizabeth Taylor’s Cleopatra! Most recently, it was seen in Men in Black International, with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson.
KYOTO, JAPAN
Again, an abundance of films have been filmed in Kyoto, but two of the most recognizable are Lost in Translation and Memoirs of a Geisha. We have photos of guests (and Erin) on those very stone steps and at the Torii Gates on their retreat!
AMALFI COAST, ITALY
The beautiful scenery of this locale is so cinematic! My first encounter with it was the famous scene in Under the Tuscan Sun (ironically), where she goes to Positano for the day. But other great films shot in the area recently are Tenet and Wonder Woman. Villa Cimbrone in Ravello, a lesser known but stunning town in the hills above Amalfi, featured prominently in both of these films.
VENICE, ITALY
Talk about photogenic. This city is perfect from every angle, so it’s no wonder so many big budget movies are filmed there. (We just saw one filming while we were there this fall!) Some of our favorites are Casino Royale, The Tourist, The Italian Job and, my personal favorite, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Timeless cities like Venice work well for film, as they are mostly unchanged for the last few hundred years.
Let us know your favorite travel moments and locations in film!
Best,
