South Africa

A land full of beauty and life. We explore Cape Town, the wine country, and a safari reserve.
Game drives, star-gazing, winery visits, and a visit to Table Mountain are just some of the adventures that await us.

Why do we love South Africa?

This country has EVERYTHING. Vibrant city culture, stunning beaches, staggering mountain ranges, a world class wine country, and of course the savannah of the African bush. You could start a day amongst the most sought-after wildlife in the world, then end the day drinking wine on a beach in Cape Town. (We personally tested this out.) If you want to feel a sense of wonder and have an adventure, this is the place to do it. We love places that give us perspective—whether its stargazing, looking at cave paintings or marveling at majestic animals in their natural habitats, this country really gave us true sense of our place in space and time, of how little we are in the history of the world and in the splendor of this universe. This is why we travel.

Where do we stay?

We split our time between a wine estate in the Stellenbosch region and a wildlife reserve 3 hours inland. This gives a great overview of what the country offers—from flying into Cape Town to seeing the almost Provencal nature of wine country to finally reaching the desert terrain of the reserve, it’s a little bit of everything. Our stay in Stellenbosch is one of relaxation and rejuvenation, waking up amongst the famed rolling clouds of the area and lounging in modern luxury, indulging in spa treatments, surrounded by some of the finest wine in Africa. Then we venture to a true gem, the wildlife reserve in central SA. While staying in romantic rooms with plush bedding, clawfoot tubs and outdoor showers, you will be taken on a wild ride through a reserve the size of Singapore with the chance to see some of the most sought after animals on the continent on well organized game drives.

Why take a wellness retreat to South Africa?

We believe that yoga can be experienced both on and off the mat, and that it is a practice that can improve our lives and lead us into the present moment. Traveling to a new place and experiencing a new culture also helps lead us to the present moment by heightening our senses and putting a mixing up our day to day. In South Africa, we are challenged to experience a dramatically different landscape and routine, forcing us to be mindful and observant, but it is balanced with some of the highest quality service and care to leave you feeling restored. It is the ultimate wake up from daily life.

A portion of our South Africa retreats will go to supporting the efforts of the Captured in Africa Foundation who’s motto is “GOING ABOVE & BEYOND TO WORK, RESCUE OR RELOCATE – ENSURING BIG CATS ARE PROTECTED”. The Captured In Africa Foundation is a registered non-profit organisation, established to support ongoing efforts for the protection, relocation or rescue of vulnerable and at risk big cats, both in the wild and exploited captive situations.

In countries such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Egypt and the Middle-East, there is huge exploitation of what some refer to as “Africa’s natural resources” and where these “resources” are under threat or have been exploited, Captured In Africa hope to protect and in many cases rescue and/or relocate to safeguard their future.

South Africa in particular is a hub for lion breeding and exploitation – times arise when lions and other big cats require intervention. This intervention can either be a rescue of an exploited big cat from breeders or private owners, or a relocation of a big cat from one wild area to another. The foundation works alongside various conservation groups in Africa to aide in wildlife management to safeguard wild cats, as well as to track, locate & protect at risk big cats.
