Where exactly is Chianti?

Many people confuse Italian cities (Florence, Siena, Cortona) with regions (Tuscany, Umbria, Liguria), and more specialized areas within the regions such as Chianti. Tuscany is a full region in Italy with many cities and villages. Florence is the capital city of this region, and Chianti is not a city, but a specified area within Tuscany which lies below Florence and north of Siena. It is a territory with denominations of a particular wine style and the land that produce the style of grapes that are included in "Chianti" wine.

Why take a wellness retreat here?

This area is full of the stereotypical "Tuscan landscapes" that you find on postcards and paintings around the world. It's a fertile area full of hills, vineyards, olive groves, walking trails, picturesque villages, and plenty of Italian pine and cypress. It's just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the larger cities like Florence to enjoy a real "retreat" feeling, but close enough to enjoy a quick daytrip to see the cultural sites. This area allows one to feel a part of nature, close to the tastes that make this region so special, and a part of the slowed-down rhythm that these villages exude. We believe that yoga can be experienced both on and off the mat, and that it is a practice that can improve our lives and lead us into the present moment. Traveling to a new place and experiencing a new culture also helps lead us to the present moment by heightening our senses and putting a mixing up our day to day.

What is there to do?

On our retreats in Chianti we are able to mix downtime with plenty of fun activities. We enjoy a spa day in the thermal waters or treatments with the famous wine skins or olive oil. We visit the smaller villages to get a feel of the day-to-day in the area with a stop for gelato in the square, shopping in the markets, or an aperitivo on a terrace. Of course, we visit one of the famous Chianti wine producers for a cantina tour and tasting. Plus there are plenty of farms to see - from the "pecorino" sheep cheese, to olive oil producers. The larger cities of Florence and Siena are nearby with plenty of cultural sites, museums, and churches to explore!
