There are many kinds of retreats in the world, but what we tended to see when we first birthed Eat Pray Move, was either a yoga retreat in a very monastic setting, at a beach or remote area, where you practice all day and focus on detoxing foods OR luxe medi-spas, where you are in an isolated resort with a prescribed regime for the week.
These kinds of programs have value and are great for meeting very specific needs, like deepening a practice or getting to a root health issue, but our approach is quite different.
Our philosophy is that travel in and of itself is an act of meditation, as we are forced to be present and have no option of running on automatic. We have to go back to our senses to guide is in a new surrounding. We offer classes as familiar touch points to ground and prepare ourselves for the newness we will encounter out in the world as we move through it. Our retreats happen in connection with the community we have travelled to, immersed in their culture and environment, experiencing their food and drinks, art, architecture, music and energy. Our goal is that experiencing a place this way helps us to practice being present in our lives at home, seeing our daily world with new eyes.
